“Pea ʻi heʻene tuʻu hake mei he kelekelé, ko ʻene lea māvaé ʻeni:

“Hono ʻikai fakafiemālie ki he kakai ʻoku tangí ʻi he taimi ʻoku ui ai ke nau māvae mo honau husepānití, uaifí, tamaí, faʻeé, fānaú pe kāinga ʻofeiná, ke nau ʻiloʻi neongo ʻoku tuku hifo ʻa e sino fakamāmaní ʻo ʻauha, ka te nau toetuʻu ʻo nofo ʻi he māfana taʻengatá ʻi he nāunau taʻe faʻamaté, ʻo ʻikai mamahi pe toe mate, ka te nau hoko ko e kau ʻea-hoko ʻo e ʻOtuá pea kaungā ʻea-hoko fakataha mo Sīsū Kalaisi.”2
Siosefa Uatesoni ʻIongi (1828–73), ‘ilamutu ‘o Pilikihami ‘Iongi na’e fononga mei ‘Ingilani ki he ‘Iunaiteti Siteití ʻi he 1853:

[“He toki vanu mo ha ʻata fakapoʻuli moʻoni ia ʻoku tau ui ko e maté! Ke hiki atu mei he tuʻunga moʻui ko ʻeni ʻo e sino fakamatelié, ki ha tuʻunga māngoa, meʻa faikehe! Hono ʻikai fakapoʻuli ko e vanú ni! “Hono ʻikai fakafiemālie kiate kinautolu kuo pau ke nau tengihia ha mālōlō siʻanau ngaahi maheni, ke nau ʻilo te nau toe feohi pē! Hono ʻikai fakalotolahi kiate kinautolu kotoa ʻoku moʻui fakatatau mo e ngaahi tefitoʻi moʻoni kuo fakahā mai ʻe he moʻoní pea mahalo ʻo tautautefito kiate kinautolu ne moʻui aʻuaʻú, ne nau faingataʻaʻia mo kātaki ʻo aʻu ki he ngataʻangá, ke nau ʻilo he ʻikai fuoloa kuo tau toe tuʻu hake mei he ngaahi fonualotó, pea haʻu ko ha ngaahi laumālie moʻui taʻefaʻamate, ke toe feohi mo hotau ngaahi kaumeʻa ne siviʻi mo falalaʻiaʻí, ʻo ʻikai toe uesia ʻe he ngaahi nunuʻa ʻo e maté, pea mo fakaʻosi ʻa e ngāue ne tuku mai ʻe he Tamaí ke tau fakahokó!”6

“Ka ne taʻeʻoua ʻa e ongoongolelei ʻo Kalaisí, ʻe hoko ʻa e fakamāvaeʻi ʻe he maté ko e taha ʻo e ngaahi meʻa fakamamahi taha te tau ala fakakaukau atu ki ai; ka ʻi heʻetau maʻu ʻa e ongoongoleleí mo ʻilo ʻa e tefitoʻi moʻoni ʻo e toetuʻú, ʻoku mole atu leva ha konga lahi ʻo e mamahí, tangí pea mo e faingataʻaʻia ʻi he maté. … ʻOku hoko mai ʻa e toetuʻu ʻa e maté ki he ʻatamai maama ʻo e tangatá, ʻo ʻi ai leva ha fakavaʻe pau ke falala ki ai hono laumālié. [“Naʻe puke lahi ʻa Uili, ʻa siʻeku tama ʻofaʻangá, he poó kotoa ʻo aʻu ki he 7:30 pongipongí, ko e taimi ia ne tukuange ai mei hono faingataʻaʻiá. ʻOfa ke tāpuakiʻi ʻe he ʻOtuá siʻono laumālié. Ne siʻi faingataʻaʻia lahi moʻoni. Naʻe hoko ʻene maté tuʻunga ʻi he taʻofi ʻa e saliote ʻa Misa Poulutaá ʻi he Moʻunga Seni ʻEní, ʻi Uanisiuefi, Sūlei, ʻi ʻIngilani.
