ʻI he taimi ní, neongo e taʻefemahinoʻaki ʻi he fili Fale Alea ʻa B. H., ne kamata ke vakai e kau taki ʻo e Siasí ki he maumau ʻi hono fakangofua ha Kāingalotu mali tokolahi ke feinga ki ha tuʻunga fakapuleʻangá. Naʻe ʻikai ko ha meʻa ia ne nau toe fie fakahoko.26


ʻI ʻEpeleli 1900, ne foki ʻa Sina Pelēsenitia Kaati, ʻofefine ʻo e palesiteni lahi ʻo e Fineʻofa ko Sina ʻIongí, ki ʻapi ki Katisoni, Kānata, hili ia haʻane nofo ʻi ha ngaahi uike lahi mo ʻene faʻē taʻu fitungofulu mā hivá ʻi Sōleki Siti. Naʻe pehē ʻe Sina Pelēsenitia ʻi haʻane tohi ki hono tehina ko Susa Keití, “Naʻá ne kātekina lelei pē ʻa e fonongá, pea naʻá ne lea hangē ha ʻāngeló ki heʻene kau fineʻofá. ʻOku ou fuʻu laukau ʻaki ia.”

Ka ne kei hohaʻa pē ʻa Sina Pelēsenitia koeʻuhí ko e fakaʻau ke motuʻa ange ʻene fineʻeikí. Naʻe feʻunga mo ha kilomita nai ʻe tahaafe teau ʻa e mamaʻo ʻo Katisoni mei Sōleki Sití. Ka ʻi ai ha liliu fakafokifā ʻi he tuʻunga moʻui lelei ʻa e fineʻeiki ʻa Sina Pelēsenitiá, mahalo he ʻikai te ne toe lava ʻo sio ki ai kimuʻa peá ne hiki atú.27

Ka ʻi Katisoní, ne kei fakahoko pē ʻe Sina Pelēsenitia hono ngaahi fatongia ko e palesiteni ʻo e KMFKF (YLMIA) ʻo e Siteiki ʻAlapetá. Naʻe ʻikai tokolahi hono nofoʻi ʻo Katisoní, ka ne ʻikai ke pehē ai ʻoku ʻikai tokanga e kakai kei talavoú ki he ngaahi meʻa hangē ko e keimi paʻangá mo e tōtuʻa hono ngāue ʻaki ʻo e kava mālohí. Naʻe ʻi ai ha niʻihi ʻo e kakai lalahi ʻi he koló ʻa ia naʻá ne ʻiloʻí ne nau tā ha ngaahi sīpinga ʻikai lelei ki he toʻu tupu kei iiki angé.29

Naʻe mahino foki naʻe fie maʻu ke toe akoʻi lahi ange ʻa e toʻu tupu ʻo e Siasí ʻi Katisoni mo e ngaahi tūkui kolo kehé fekauʻaki mo e angamaʻá. Ka neongo ia ʻi he taimi ní, hangē ne fiemālie ange ʻa e toʻu tangata kei tupu haké ke toki mali kuo nau matuʻotuʻa pea niʻihi, tautautefito ki he kakai fefiné, ne ʻikai pē ke nau mali kinautolu. Naʻe ʻuhinga ʻeni, ne tokolahi ange e kakai kei talavou naʻe fie maʻu ke nau kei nofo angamaʻa pē ʻi ha vahaʻataimi fuoloa.30

Naʻe lave ʻa Sina Pelēsenitia ki he ngaahi palopalema ko ʻení ʻi ha fakataha mo e Ngaahi Uooti KMFKF mo e KMFKT (YMMIA) ʻo Katisoní ʻi he konga kimuʻa ʻo Meé. Naʻá ne fakatokanga ki he toʻu tupú ʻo pehē, “ʻOku faʻa ʻomi ʻe he ngaahi fiefia ʻi ha mōmenití ʻa e mamahi ʻi he toenga ʻo e moʻuí. ʻOku totonu ke tau fekumi ki he loto-fakatōkilaló mo e angaʻofá pea fakahoko ki he niʻihi kehé ʻa ia ʻoku tau fakaʻamu ke fakahoko kiate kitautolú.”31

ʻI he faʻahitaʻu fakatōlau mo māfana ko iá, naʻá ne kau atu foki ki ha ngaahi fakatahaʻanga lahi ʻo e Uooti KMFKF ʻo Katisoní. Ne fakataha e kautaha ko iá ʻi he efiafi Pulelulu kotoa pē. Naʻe faʻa tataki ʻe Mami ʻIpi, ko e palesiteni taʻu uongofulu mā tolu ʻo e kautaha ʻi he uōtí ʻa e ngaahi fakatahaʻangá, kae fakahoko ʻe he niʻihi kehé ʻa e ʻū lēsoní. Naʻe fakahoko fakahili māhina maʻu pē ʻe he kau finemuí ha fakatahaʻanga fakamoʻoni, ʻo ʻoange ha faingamālie ki he mēmipa takitaha ʻo e kulupú ke fakahoko ʻene fakamoʻoní ki he toengá.32

ʻI he kotoa ʻo e taʻu 1900, ne pulusi ʻe he Makasini ʻa e Finemuí (Young Woman’s Journal) ha ngaahi fakamatala konga kehekehe ʻe hongofulu mā ua ʻo ha ngaahi lēsoni naʻe ui ko e “Ngaahi Moʻoni Fakaeʻulungaanga maʻá e Kau Finemuí (Ethics for Young Girls).” ʻI he māhina kotoa naʻe ʻi ai ha lēsoni foʻou, ʻa ia ne takitaha faʻu ia ke tokoni ke fakafaikehekeheʻi ʻe he kau finemuí ʻa e totonú mei he halá. Naʻe tui ʻa Sina Pelēsenitia ʻe lava ʻe he toutou ʻalu maʻu pē ki he NGKMF (MIA) ʻo fakamālohia e toʻu tupú mo tākiekina ʻenau ngaahi ngāué ke lelei ange. Naʻe poupouʻi e kau finemuí ʻi he ngaahi fakatahaʻangá ke nau tuʻu mavahe mei he ngaahi meʻa fakamāmaní mo e fehalākí. Naʻe akoʻi kinautolu ʻe Sina Pelēsenitia, “ʻOku ʻikai totonu ke tau teitei maaʻi ʻa e moʻoní, pe ko hono fakahaaʻi ko ha kau Māmonga kitautolú.”34

Naʻá ne tapou foki ki heʻenau mātuʻá ke tataki kinautolu ʻi he hala ʻo e māʻoniʻoní. ʻI he konga kimuʻa ange ʻo e taʻu ko iá, lolotonga haʻane ʻaʻahi ki ha siteiki ʻi ʻAitahō, naʻá ne fanongo ki hano toutou lea ʻaki ʻe heʻene faʻeé ha meʻa naʻe akoʻi ʻe Siosefa Sāmita ki he Fineʻofá ʻi Nāvū: “Tūtuuʻi ha ngaahi fakakaukau lelei ki he ʻatamai ʻo e fānaú. ʻOku nau fakatokangaʻi ʻetau sīpingá.” Naʻe tui ʻa Sina Pelēsenitia ʻoku ʻaonga foki e foʻi moʻoni ko ʻení ʻi Katisoni.

Naʻá ne fakamanatu ki he kau taki kehé ʻi Siulai, “ʻOku totonu ke tau tā ha ngaahi sīpinga lelei ki heʻetau fānaú, talitali lelei mo ʻofaʻi kinautolu, pea akoʻi kinautolu ke tafoki mei he kovi kotoa pē.”35


ʻI he efiafi ʻo e ʻaho 10 ʻo Tīsema, 1900, ko e toki vakai ia ʻa Siaosi Q. Kēnoni ki he ʻOtu Motu ʻo Hauaiʻí talu mei heʻene ngāue fakafaifekau ai ʻi he 1850 tupú. ʻI heʻene taʻu uongofulu mā tolú, naʻá ne hoko ko e siʻisiʻi taha ʻi he ʻuluaki kau faifekau ʻo e Siasí ne fakafolau atu ki he ngaahi ʻotu motú. ʻI he taimi ní, ʻi heʻene hoko ko ha tokoni ki he Kau Palesitenisī ʻUluakí, naʻá ne foki ke fakamanatua ʻa e taʻu nimangofulu ʻo ʻene tūʻutá mo e kamataʻanga ʻo e Siasí ʻi Hauaiʻí.36

Hili ha ngaahi houa siʻi mei he vakai ʻa Siaosi ki he ʻotu motú, ne tūʻuta atu ʻa Siaosi mo hono kaungā fonongá ki Honolulu ʻi he motu ko ʻOahú. Naʻá ne mohe ai he pō ko iá mo ha ongo mēmipa ʻo e Siasí ko ʻĒpalahame mo Mineva Fenanitesi pea ʻalu ʻi he ʻaho hono hokó ki ha kātoanga kai mo ha Kāingalotu nai ʻe toko tahaafe ʻi ha fale fakatahaʻangá. Naʻe kau ʻi he kakai ne omí ha niʻihi ne papitaiso ʻe Siaosi lolotonga ʻene ngāue fakafaifekaú. Pea niʻihi ko e fānau pe makapuna ʻo e kakai naʻá ne akoʻí.37

Naʻe ʻā hake ʻa Siaosi ʻi he pongipongi hokó, ʻaho 12 ʻo Tīsemá, mo ʻene faingataʻaʻia ke lea ki he kakai Hauaiʻí ʻi he kātoanga fakamanatú. ʻI heʻene kei hoko ko ha faifekau kei talavoú, naʻe saiʻia e kakaí ai ʻi heʻene pōtoʻi lea mo tohi ʻi he lea faka-Hauaiʻí. Ka kuo tātaaitaha haʻane toe fakaʻaongaʻi ia talu ʻene foki ki ʻapí, pea naʻá ne hohaʻa he taimí ni ʻe fakatupu mamahi ki he Kāingalotú ʻene ʻikai lava ʻo lea faka-Hauaiʻi leleí.38

Naʻe fakahoko ʻa e kātoangá ʻi ha fale heleʻuhila foʻou ʻi Honolulu. Naʻe fakakau mai ʻe he kau taki fakalotofonua ʻo e Siasí ha kau ʻokesitulā lelei, kuaea ʻe ua mei Honolulu mo Laʻie, mo ha ngaahi kulupu mūsika kehe. ʻI ha fale fakapuleʻanga ofi mai pē, naʻe teuteuʻi ai ʻe he Kāingalotú ha maʻuʻanga meʻatokoni lahi ʻo e ngaahi meʻakai faka-Hauaiʻí mo fakaafeʻi e tokotaha kotoa pē ʻi he koló ke kau ange. Kia Siaosí, hangē ne kau kotoa ange e fonuá ki he kātoangá.39

ʻI he hokosia ʻa e taimi ke lea ai ʻa Siaosí, naʻe kamata ʻene leá ʻi he lea faka-Pilitāniá, ʻo talanoa fekauʻaki mo e ngaahi ʻaho ʻo ʻene ngāue fakafaifekaú, ʻi he taimi ne liʻaki ai ʻe ha niʻihi tokolahi ʻo hono ngaahi hoa ngāué ʻa e ngāué pea ʻikai ha teitei tokanga ʻa e kakai ne lea faka-Pilitāniá ki he ongoongoleleí. Ne pehē ʻe Siaosi, “Ko e taimi ia ne u tuʻu hake ai peá u fakapapauʻi kiate au te u nofo ʻi he ngaahi motú ni mo ngāue ʻi hono kakaí.”40

ʻI he lea ʻa Siaosí, naʻá ne ongoʻi mālohi hono nofoʻia ia ʻe he Laumālié. Ne kamata ke ne manatuʻi e ngaahi lea faka-Hauaiʻí, pea fakaʻau ke mōlia atu ʻene ongoʻi faingataʻaʻiá ʻi he kamata ke ne lea ʻi he lea faka-fonuá. Naʻe toe ofo mo fiefia ʻa e Kāingalotu Hauaiʻí. Naʻe pehē ʻe ha tokotaha, “He toki meʻa fakafiefia ʻene manatuʻi ʻetau lea faka-fonuá ʻi he ngaahi taʻu lahi ko ʻení!”41

Ne hoko atu e kātoangá ki he ʻaho hono hokó, pea naʻe lea ʻa Siaosi ki he Kāingalotú ʻi he loto-falala moʻoni ʻi heʻenau lea faka-fonuá. Naʻá ne talaange kiate kinautolu, “ʻOku ou ongoʻi he ʻahó ni ʻo makehe ange mei ha toe ʻaho ʻa e ngaahi haʻi ʻokú ne fakatahaʻi e kakai ʻa e ʻOtuá. ʻA ia ʻoku omi ai ʻa e kakaí ke tui ki he ongoongoleleí pea fakauku hifo kinautolu ʻi he ngaahi vai ʻo e papitaisó, ʻo nau tupulaki ai ke feʻofaʻaki.”42

Naʻe nofo ʻa Siaosi mo e Kāingalotú ʻo laka siʻi hake he uike ʻe tolú ʻi Hauaiʻi. Lolotonga ʻene kei ʻi he motu ko Mauí, naʻá ne ʻaʻahi ki he kolo ko Uailukú, ʻa ia naʻá ne aʻusia ai ʻene fuofua lavameʻa ko ha faifekaú. Naʻe liliu lahi e koló ʻo ʻikai ke ne mei fakatokangaʻi ha meʻa, ka ne faingofua pē ke ne maʻu e nofoʻanga ʻo hono ongo kaungāmeʻa ko Sonatane mo Kiti Napelá, ʻa ia ne na fakatou mālōlō ʻi ha taʻu nai ia ʻe hongofulu kimuʻa. Ne hangē e ongo tautehina Napelá ko ha fāmili kia Siaosí, pea ne hoko ʻa Sonatane ko e kaungā liliu lea kiate ia ʻo e Tohi ʻa Molomoná.43

ʻI he ʻaʻahi ʻa Siaosi ki he ngaahi motú, naʻá ne maʻu ha ngaahi kaungāmeʻa foʻou tokolahi, kau ai ʻa Tomiso Katisunuma, ko ha tangata Siapani naʻá ne kau ki he Siasí lolotonga ʻene ako ʻi he Kolisi Ako Ngoue ʻo ʻIutaá. Naʻá ne fetaulaki foki mo ha Kāingalotu ne teʻeki pē ke nau maʻu e ngaahi ouau ʻo e temipalé, neongo ʻenau moʻui faivelengá. Ne ongo kiate ia honau tūkungá, peá ne poupouʻi kinautolu ke moʻui taau ke hū ki he temipalé mo fakaʻaongaʻi ʻa e tuí ke ueʻi ʻe he ʻEikí ʻEne palōfitá ke ʻomi e ngaahi tāpuaki ʻo e temipalé kiate kinautolu.44

ʻI he ʻaho ne foki ai ʻa Siaosí, ne lōnuku mai ha Kāingalotu ʻe laungeau mo ha kau ifi fakalotofonua ʻo fakafetaulakiʻi ʻene salioté ki he uafu ʻi Honolulú. ʻI heʻenau fakahaaʻi fakaʻosi ʻenau ʻofá, ne fakavave mai ha fānau mo ha Kāingalotu matuʻotuʻa ʻe toko uongofulu nai ʻo fakakahoa ʻaki ia ha ngaahi kahoa lanu kehekehe mo fakaʻofoʻofa. Naʻá ne kaka hake leva ki he vaká, pea ifi ʻe he kau ifí ha fasi fakamāvae.

ʻI he vakai ʻa Siaosi ki mui ki he Kāingalotú ʻi he uafú, naʻá ne ʻiloʻi he ʻikai te nau teitei ngalo ʻiate ia. Ne nau ui kiate ia ʻi hono fakahaaʻi ʻenau ʻofá mo e fakamāvaé, “Aloha nui.” “Aloha nui.”45


“Kuo aata mai he ʻahó ni ha senituli foʻou ki he māmaní.”

Naʻe ongo e leʻo ʻo LiuLoi Sinoú ʻi he kotoa ʻo e Tāpanekale Sōlekí ʻi heʻene lau e lea kamata ʻo ha pōpoaki ne hiki ʻe heʻene tamaí, Lōlenisou Sinou, ki he ngaahi puleʻanga ʻo e māmaní.46

Ko e ʻaho 1 ia ʻo Sānuali, 1901, ko e fuofua ʻaho ʻo e senituli uongofulú. Naʻe mātuʻaki momoko ʻaupito e ʻeá ʻi tuʻa, ka naʻe mavahe ha kakai ʻe toko fāafe tupu mei he māfana ʻo honau ngaahi ʻapí ʻi he pongipongi ko iá ke fakafiefiaʻi e ʻahó ʻi ha fakataha makehe mo e palōfitá, kau taki māʻolunga kehé mo e Kuaea Tāpanekalé. Naʻe teuteuʻi foki ʻa e Tāpanekalé ki he polokalamá, pea ne tautau mei he ngaahi paipa ʻo e ʻōkaní ha sisi ʻuhila naʻe sipelaʻi ai ʻa e ngaahi lea “Talitali Lelei Kimoutolu.”47

Naʻe tangutu mei he tuʻunga malangá, ʻo ʻikai fuʻu mamaʻo mei he feituʻu ne tuʻu ai ʻa LiuLoí, ʻa Palesiteni Sinou, ʻa ia ne uesia hono leʻó ʻi he hulufau ʻo e momokó. Naʻá ne fakafanongo lelei fakataha mo e Kāingalotu ʻi he lokí ki hono lau ʻe LiuLoi ʻa e pōpoakí. Naʻe fakahingoa nounou ia ko e “Pōpoaki ki he Māmaní,” ʻa ia naʻe fakamatala ai fekauʻaki mo e ngaahi ʻilo fakasaienisi fisifisimuʻa mo e ngaahi fakalakalaka fakatekinolosia ʻi he taʻu ʻe teau kuo ʻosí pea fakahaaʻi ai e loto-vēkeveke ʻa Palesiteni Sinou ki he senituli foʻoú.

Naʻá ne kole ki he kau taki ʻo e māmaní ʻi he pōpoakí ke nau siʻaki ʻa e taú pea fekumi ki he “tuʻunga lelei ʻi he faʻahinga ʻo e tangatá” kae ʻikai ko hono “fakahīkihikiʻi ʻo ha matakali pe fakalahi ʻo ha puleʻanga.” Naʻá ne pehē, “ʻOku ʻi homou ʻaofi nimá ʻa e mālohi ke tofa ʻa e hala ki he hāʻele mai ʻa e Tuʻi ʻo e Ngaahi Tuʻí, ʻa ia ʻokú Ne puleʻi ʻa e kotoa ʻo e māmaní.” Naʻá ne tapou kiate kinautolu ke poupouʻi ʻa e melinó, fakangata ʻa e ngaohikoviá pea ngāue fakataha ke fakangata ʻa e tukuhausiá mo hiki hake ʻa e kakai tokolahi naʻe faingataʻaʻiá.

Naʻá ne kole foki ki he kakai koloaʻiá mo e masivá fakatouʻosi ke nau fekumi ki ha founga lelei mo angaʻofa ange ʻo e moʻuí. Naʻá ne pehē ki he masivá, “ʻOku ofi mai [homou] huhuʻí. Mou fakapotopoto ʻi he taimi hoʻomou koloaʻiá.” Ki he koloaʻiá, naʻá ne faleʻi kau ki he faʻa foakí ʻo pehē: “Fakaava atu homou ngaahi tauhiʻanga meʻá, foaki hoʻomou paʻangá pea kau ki he ngaahi kautaha te ne foaki ha ngāue maʻá e hala ngāué mo fakafiemālieʻi ʻa e taʻefiemālie ʻoku tākiekina ki he kākā mo e kovi ʻokú ne fakamalaʻiaʻi homou ngaahi puleʻanga mālohí mo ne fakakoviʻi e ʻātakai lelei ʻoku mou ʻi aí.”

Naʻá ne fakamoʻoni ki he ʻEikí mo ʻEne ongoongolelei kuo fakafoki maí. Naʻe pehē ʻe Palesiteni Sinou, “Kuo pau ke Ne fakahoko ʻEne ngāué, pea ʻe fakaʻilongaʻi ʻi he senituli hono uongofulú ʻene tupulakí.”

Fakaʻosí, naʻá ne tāpuekina e kakai ʻo e māmaní, ʻi he ngaahi feituʻu pē ne nau ʻi aí. Naʻá ne pehē, “Fakatauange ke faitāpuekina kimoutolu mei he langí. ʻOfa ke tekeʻi atu ʻe he maama ʻo e moʻoní ʻa e fakapoʻulí mei homou ngaahi laumālié. ʻOfa ke tupulaki ʻa e māʻoniʻoní pea hōloa ʻa e faiangahalá, pea ke hokohoko atu pē ʻetau moʻuí. Fakatauange ke ikunaʻi ʻe he fakamaau totonú ʻa e koví pea kapusi ia ki tuʻa.”

Naʻá ne pehē, “Tuku ke hoko e ngaahi fakakaukaú ni, ko e leʻo ʻo e ‘kau Māmongá’ ʻi he ʻotu moʻunga ʻo ʻIutaá, ʻalu atu ki he māmaní kotoa, pea fakahaaʻi ke ʻilo ʻe he kakai kotoa ko ʻetau fakaʻamú mo hotau misioná ʻa e tāpuaki mo hono fakamoʻui ʻo e faʻahinga kotoa ʻo e tangatá.”48
