Ezra 7

Ezra—Teacher of the Law

Ezra 7 introduces Ezra the priest, who was also a scribe, or teacher. The list of names in the first five verses of chapter 7 tell us that Ezra was a direct descendant of Aaron, brother of Moses. We also learn from this chapter that Artaxerxes allowed Ezra to take a group of Jews from Babylon to Jerusalem. Furthermore, Artaxerxes provided money for the temple and had Ezra take treasures from the temple in Babylon and return them to the temple in Jerusalem. We also read that Ezra was given power to appoint judges among the people to serve in the Jews’ local government.
