“ ʻOku foaki ʻe he ʻEiki ko e ʻOtuá ʻa e maama ki he ʻatamaí; he ʻokú ne folofola ki he tangatá ʻi heʻenau leá, koeʻuhi ke mahino kiate kinautolu” (2 Nīfai 31:3).
Naʻe haʻu e fānau ʻi he kaungāʻapi foʻou ʻo Laiení mei he ngaahi feituʻu kehekehe ʻo māmani: ʻAositelēlia, Kānata, ʻIsipite, ʻIngilani, ʻInitia, Kueiti, Mekisikou, Sauti ʻAlepea, Sikotilani, ʻIunaiteti Siteití, mo Vietinemi.
Naʻe ofo ʻa Laieni ʻi heʻene feʻiloaki mo e kakai mei ha ngaahi feituʻu kehekehe, ka naʻá ne fakatokangaʻi naʻe faʻa vaʻinga pē ʻa e fānaú ia mo kinautolu ʻoku nau lea fakafonua tataú. ʻOku faʻa angakovi e fānau mei he fonua ʻe tahá ki he fānau mei ha fonua kehe. Naʻe lotomamahi ai ʻa Laieni.
Naʻe fifili ʻa Laieni pe ko e hā ʻe lava ke ne faí, ka naʻe faingataʻa ke fakakaukauʻi ha faʻahinga meʻa. He ʻikai tuʻu hake pē ʻo talaange ki he tokotaha kotoa ke nau fakakaungāmeʻa—he ʻikai mahino ia kiate kinautolu he naʻa nau lea ʻaki e ngaahi lea kehekehe.
ʻI he ʻaho ʻe taha ne ʻeva atu ai e fāmili ʻo Laiení he halá. Naʻe ʻi tuʻa ha niʻihi ʻo e fānau tangata naʻe angakovi. Naʻe toʻotoʻo ʻe ha tokotaha ha foʻi pulu ʻakapulu. Naʻe saiʻia foki mo Laieni he ʻakapulú. Naʻe lue loto-toʻa atu pē ʻa Laieni ki he tamaiki tangatá ni. Naʻá ne ʻilo siʻisiʻi pē ki heʻenau leá pea nau ʻilo ha ngaahi lea siʻi ki heʻene lea ʻaʻaná. Naʻe kamata ke malimali mo kata ʻa Laieni mo e tamaikí ʻi heʻenau ʻahiʻahiʻi e ngaahi lea kehekehé. Hili iá ne tuhu ʻa Laieni ki he foʻi pulú. Naʻá ne fehuʻi māmālie ange mo fakaʻamu pē ʻe mahino kiate kinautolu, “ʻOku mou fie ʻakapulu mo au?” Naʻá ne toe ʻai ha foʻi malimali lahi ange.

Ne pehē ange ʻe Laieni, “Tō tō atu! ʻOku peheni, Fineʻeiki. Ko kimautolú kotoa ko e ngaahi sū!”
Ne fehuʻi ange ʻe he fineʻeiki, “Sū?”
“ʻIo. ʻOku mau kehekehe kātoa, ka ʻoku mau tui kotoa pē ʻa e sū ʻe ua—pea ko e meʻa pē ia ʻoku fie maʻu ki he ʻakapulú.”
