Cycling
Purpose
Our bodies are gifts from Heavenly Father. Gain appreciation for your body by participating in cycling, a healthy hobby that can increase confidence and physical strength.
Description
Schedule an organized bike ride to learn the basics of cycling, build friendships, and motivate your group to be healthy. Participants who do not own bikes can rent or borrow them.
As you plan this activity, please follow the counsel given in chapter 13 of Handbook 2: Administering the Church (2010) and review “Safety Recommendations for Church Activities.”
More Ideas
-
Trail help—Clean up trash or help with maintenance along a local bike trail or city bike lanes.
-
Safety first—Hold an activity that focuses on cycling laws and safe cycling practices like signaling, finding less-busy riding routes, and riding at night. Consider teaching first aid for common cycling injuries.
-
Learn to fix it—Ask a local bike shop or experienced volunteer to teach your group about bicycle maintenance (how to patch a tire, grease a chain, change brakes, and so on). You might hold a service activity afterward by offering to fix bikes in your community.
-
Bike carnival—Host a bike carnival for your group or children in your community by creating an obstacle course and teaching safety techniques. Consider handing out certificates or small awards to participants at the end of the activity.
-
High adventure—For more experienced riders, plan a mountain biking or road cycling trip that takes a few days. You could also develop a training program before the event.
Discussion
Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:
-
Why do you think hobbies like cycling are important?
-
When have you experienced the blessings of participating in a healthy hobby like cycling?
-
What feelings or impressions do you have about cycling?
-
How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
