Learn to Navigate
Purpose
Do you know how to find your way with a map or a compass? Learning how to navigate and follow directions will help you find your way both physically and spiritually.
Description
Learn how to get somewhere using written directions, a map, a compass, or GPS. Use these tools to navigate to predetermined locations.
As you plan this activity, please follow the counsel given in chapter 13 of Handbook 2: Administering the Church (2010) and review “Safety Recommendations for Church Activities.”
More Ideas
-
Obstacle course—Create an obstacle course and have participants try to find their way through it blindfolded, with only another person’s voice to guide them.
-
Get to know your town—Split into teams to find lesser-known places in your town, either on foot or with an adult leader as the driver. No GPS allowed!
-
Geocaching—Use a geocaching website to look up the coordinates of geocaches (special hidden containers) in your area. Use a smartphone or GPS to follow the coordinates and find the geocaches.
-
Wilderness guide—Use a compass to navigate on a hiking excursion.
Discussion
Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:
-
Why do you think it is important to learn to navigate?
-
Think back to a time when you were lost and then found your way physically or spiritually. How did you feel about this experience?
-
What thoughts or impressions do you have about the tools Heavenly Father has given us to find our way back to Him?
-
How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
