Look for the Good in Others
Purpose
Have you ever noticed how easy it can be to focus on someone’s negative traits? Focusing on the negative can make it hard to get to know someone or understand another person’s point of view. But when you look for the good, you’re a better friend and neighbor. You also understand and love people more as you learn to see them the way Heavenly Father sees them.
Goal Description
Look for the good in others.
Goal Ideas
-
Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings when you are with others. Do you notice that you are judging them? Every time you have a judgmental thought, replace it by thinking of something positive about that person. Pray to be aware of others’ positive qualities. Maybe you’ll notice someone’s smile or how they work hard to do well in school or sports. Make a goal to compliment people more often on the things you notice.
-
Learn about someone whose background is different from yours—maybe someone from another country or culture. What did you learn that helps you understand that person better? Tell a friend or write in your journal about your experience.
-
Learn about your divine identity. It may be hard to see the good in others if you don’t see the good in yourself. The video “Self-Esteem” with Elder and Sister Bednar may be helpful.
