Purpose

Learn about sharing the gospel by working with the full-time missionaries to find and teach others.

Description

Work with the missionaries to serve an investigator, less-active member, or other member of your community. Be friendly and genuinely interested in those you serve. Focus on meeting their needs and serving them as the Savior would.

More Ideas

  • Get to know you—Invite each member of your group to bring a nonmember friend to an activity where the missionaries will be present. Start the activity by playing simple “icebreaker” games to help everyone get to know each other. Then invite participants and their friends to anonymously write questions or things they would like to know about the Church and place the questions in a box or bag. The missionaries and members of your group could answer the questions.

  • Use technology—Invite the missionaries to demonstrate how they use technology to share the gospel. They could also talk about ways to use technology wisely. Then group members could take time to practice what they’ve learned.

  • Missionary panel—Invite the full-time missionaries, recently returned missionaries, and the ward mission leader to participate in a panel discussion on missionary work. Encourage audience members to prepare questions ahead of time. Topics could include how to share the gospel and fellowship investigators or less-active members. Parents could be invited as well. Encourage participants to listen for spiritual promptings during the discussion, then invite them to plan how they will act on those promptings. Set a time for the group to share their experiences on Sunday or at a future activity.

  • Mini-MTC day—Invite the missionaries to speak about what the Missionary Training Center is like and how youth can prepare now to be missionaries. Depending on the size of your group, you could have the missionaries, the ward mission leader, or other ward leaders teach several classes about ways to share the gospel or and answer common gospel questions. Practice or role-play what you learn and have fun! You could also invite parents and families to this activity.

  • Working with the ward mission leader, plan a time when your group can go with the full-time missionaries to find and teach others. For example:

    • Go to a public place with the missionaries and talk to people around you. You could also sing hymns while the missionaries hand out pamphlets and copies of the Book of Mormon.

    • Work with the missionaries to prepare a lesson, then practice giving it to a member. When you feel comfortable, go with the missionaries and present the lesson to an investigator or less-active member.

Discussion

Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:

  • Why is it important to prepare to be a missionary?

  • How have you been a missionary in the past?

  • What feelings or impressions do you have about working with the full-time missionaries and sharing the gospel with others?

  • How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
