Purpose

Words are powerful! You can invite the Spirit, set a good example, and encourage others—all through the words you use.

Goal Description

Develop a good vocabulary, avoid inappropriate language, and encourage others with your words.

Goal Ideas

  • Listen to or read good books and notice how the words the authors use can affect your feelings. How might your words be affecting others? Set a goal to use words that help the people around you feel good in your presence.

  • For a month, learn five new vocabulary words each week. You can use a vocabulary book, an app, or even a dictionary.

  • Pay attention to the words and lyrics of media that you watch or listen to. Choose media that is positive and invites the Spirit.

  • Adding variety to your language is a good thing. When you notice words you and your friends use a lot—maybe too much?—try to think of words with similar meanings that you can use instead. A dictionary or thesaurus might help. Try out your new words when you’re hanging out with friends!

  • If using bad language has become a habit for you, make a plan to clean up your language. You could think of a favorite hymn or scripture or you could make a list of better words to use when you’re tempted to use bad language. Include praying for help to change as part of your plan!

  • Encourage your friends to use clean language. You could even start a “No Cussing” club.

  • Create your own goal.
