Obedience—Practice Makes Perfect!

Purpose

If you want to get better at something, you practice. Did you know practice works for obeying the commandments too? You don’t have to be perfect right away. Just keep practicing! And watch for the blessings that come along the way.

Goal Description

Obey the commandments and don’t give up. Try again any time you fall short.

Goal Ideas

  • Read Doctrine and Covenants 130:20–21 and write down your thoughts and ideas about why obedience is the first law of heaven. You may want to read other scriptures or conference talks about obedience as well.

  • Sometimes we talk ourselves out of blessings by making excuses for why obedience is too hard or doesn’t apply to us. Make a list of some excuses you might have used in the past. Then write down why the excuse shouldn’t stop you from being obedient. Make a plan for getting past the excuses so you can enjoy the blessings of obedience.

  • Choose a particular commandment. Keep the commandment as well as you can for a week. During the week, write down each blessing you receive from obeying the commandment. Ask Heavenly Father to help you recognize the blessings you receive.

  • The most important commandment for you is the one you are struggling to keep. Pray for guidance in setting a goal to improve, and ask the Lord to help you keep the commandment. Record your experiences in your journal.

  • Create your own goal.
