Purpose

Increase your love for all of God’s children by interacting with, learning from, and serving people with disabilities.

Description

Invite youth and adults with disabilities to an event with games, crafts, or get-to-know-you activities. Be sensitive to the needs and situations of those you invite.

More Ideas

  • Make a treat—Prepare a simple treat and enjoy it together.

  • Holiday fun—A holiday activity can be a fun, easy way to get everyone engaged and excited about the holiday season. Plan your activity according to local customs. You could dye Easter eggs together and hold an Easter egg hunt, bake and frost Christmas cookies together, or make valentines.

  • Musical delights—Have a karaoke night, a dance party, or both! Be sensitive to music levels and the needs of those you serve.

  • Talent show—Hold a talent show where participants can showcase their talents and skills individually or as a group. This can be a great way to get to know each other and find common interests. Invite parents or ward members to the show, and consider giving out participation awards at the end.

Discussion

Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:

  • Why do you think it is important to serve and show love to those with disabilities?

  • When have you had a positive experience with someone who has a disability?

  • What thoughts or impressions do you have about interacting with those who have disabilities?

  • How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
