Learn a New Sport

Purpose

Learn a new sport while you get some exercise and build teamwork skills. Finding new ways to boost your health and teamwork skills will help you serve the Lord your whole life.

Description

Invite someone to teach your group about an unfamiliar sport. Consider inviting friends who are not members of our faith to participate. Adapt the games so that participants of all skill levels can play. Strive to keep a spirit of friendship even in a competitive scenario.

As you plan this activity, please follow the counsel given in chapter 13 of Handbook 2: Administering the Church (2010) and review “Safety Recommendations for Church Activities.”

More Ideas

  • Sports from around the world—Have you ever heard of Kin-Ball? Sepak takraw? How about basse? There are lots of fun and interesting sports from around the world. Pick one and learn the rules so you can play as a group.

  • Make up your own sport—New sports are being invented all the time! Bring balls, nets, goals, and other sporting equipment and use them to come up with a completely new sport.

  • Learn more about a sport you love—Choose a sport that is popular in your area and invite experts to come teach you more about it. You can learn new skills or drills to help you improve your game.

  • Watch a sporting event—As a group, attend a sporting event. You could also watch an event on TV or online. Learn the rules of the sport beforehand and decide who you want to cheer for.

Discussion

Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:

  • Why do you think it is important to be healthy and get exercise?

  • When have you benefited from learning a new sport or other physical activity?

  • What feelings or impressions do you have about health and exercise?

  • How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
