Purpose

You can just do this goal later.

If that sounds like a good idea to you, it’s time to get stuff done and beat procrastination! Procrastination can lead to depression and a poor self-image. As you make a habit of tackling your responsibilities as soon as you are able to, you will become happier and more reliable.

Goal Description

Learn to overcome procrastination.

Goal Ideas

  • Start making to-do lists of all the tasks you need to do and add specific times for when you will do them. Get the items you aren’t excited about out of the way first!

  • Instead of saying “have to” and “need to” to describe your tasks and responsibilities, train yourself to think and say “I choose to … ” or “I get to … .” This will help you feel more in control of your workload.

  • Every day, give yourself a distraction-free hour when you turn off all notifications on your computer or phone, stay off social media, and take time to focus on the things to be done.

  • Try setting alarms on your phone to remind you of things you should be doing.

  • Start small. We often put things off if we aren’t sure how to do them, or if we think they will take a long time. Talk your project through with someone else for ideas to get started. Or think about what you would do in the first 15 minutes if you had plenty of time, and start there. Don’t wait to get motivated—motivation follows action!

  • Fight perfectionism. If you have trouble knowing when something is good enough, you might procrastinate until the deadline is close so you know when to stop. Try a different strategy: decide how much time each part of a project is worth and set a timer. When it goes off, stop.

  • Create your own goal.
