Public Speaking

Purpose

Learn about the power of public speaking. As you do, you will gain confidence and grow in your ability to communicate your message effectively.

Description

Invite each participant to think about something they are good at, a hobby they like, or something they enjoy researching. Invite each participant to prepare a two- to four-minute speech and present it to your group. You may want to consider inviting parents and other friends to join you.

More Ideas

  • Watch others speak—Learn about public speaking techniques by watching online videos as a group, including videos of public speakers in your area. Notice how they use their body language, voice, and research. How do they manage interruptions or questions during or after their speech? How do they inspire others to action? Make a list of tips for each person to take home.

  • Prepare a talk with a gospel message and present it to your group. Use your personal experiences to articulate what you know and feel (see Sharon Eubank, “Turn On Your Light,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2017, 6–9).

  • Group story—Invite each person in your group to contribute to a continuous story. Have participants sit in a circle and encourage everyone to speak for one minute, adding to the story of previous participants.

  • Record each other speaking—Take time to record a video of each participant speaking. Invite participants to use the recordings to learn about how fast or slow they speak, the words they use, and how they use body language. You might consider posting the videos on social media.

Discussion

Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:

  • Why do you think it is important to learn about public speaking?

  • When was a time you were inspired by a public speaker?

  • What feelings or impressions do you have about public speaking?

  • How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
