The Power of the Articles of Faith
Purpose
Discover how the Articles of Faith can strengthen your testimony and help you share the gospel with others.
Description
When a friend asks a question about what you believe, it might be helpful to use the Articles of Faith to answer. Once you know them, you’ll have a great foundation for sharing your beliefs with others. Here’s a group activity to help you learn.
Find a ball and a marker. Write the following 13Â clues about the Articles of Faith on the ball:
-
Godhead
-
Adam
-
Atonement
-
Baptism
-
Callings
-
Organization
-
Gifts
-
Scriptures
-
Revelation
-
Israel
-
Worshipping
-
Law
-
Paul
Stand in a circle with one person standing outside the circle with their back to the group (this person has access to the scriptures). Toss the ball around from person to person as fast as you can without dropping it. When the person outside the circle shouts, “Stop,” stop passing the ball.
The person holding the ball looks at the word and number closest to their right thumb and tries to recite the corresponding article of faith or give an example of a question that could be answered by that article of faith. (You could allow players to ask the person standing outside the circle for a hint.)
More Ideas
-
Primary songs—Learn the Articles of Faith songs from the Children’s Songbook. Putting the words to music is a great way to help you memorize them!
-
Cards to help you memorize—Take 13 cards and write just the first letter of each word of each article of faith, plus its number. For instance, on card 1, write down: “1. W b i G t E F, a i H S, J C, a i t H G.” You may also want to write the full text on the back to help you as you are learning.
-
Matching game—Create 26 cards, two for each article of faith. Write the words of each one on the first 13 cards. On the other 13 cards, draw a picture representing the doctrine of each article of faith. Turn all cards upside down and take turns with a friend trying to find each match. When you turn over the text and the matching picture for one article of faith, keep them and take another turn.
-
Trivia game—Make a trivia game by creating cards with questions such as “Which article of faith talks about the admonition of Paul?” or “Which article of faith tells us that God still speaks to us?” You’ll learn a lot about each one as you write the questions as well as when you play the game.
Discussion
Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:
-
Why do you think we continue to learn the Articles of Faith that the Prophet Joseph Smith wrote so long ago?
-
When was a time when you have been able to use the Articles of Faith to answer others’ questions?
-
What feelings or impressions do you have about the beliefs taught in the Articles of Faith?
-
How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
