Study Skills Workshop
Purpose
Studying can be fun! Develop study skills that will help you learn at home, church, school, or work. Study skills will be useful throughout your life.
Description
Invite a teacher, tutor, or successful student to demonstrate effective study skills. Then provide areas where participants can practice these skills. Skills could include organizing information, taking notes, studying for tests, writing essays, memorizing material, thinking positively, and so on. Divide participants into small groups and have them rotate through each area to learn each study skill.
More Ideas
-
Personal study habits—Invite everyone to share their best study habits with the group. Compile a list and give everyone a copy.
-
Memorize—Memorization is an important study skill. As a group, choose an uplifting quote or poem to memorize. Talk about tips for memorization and then memorize the quote or poem together.
-
Winning against distraction—As you study, you may be tempted by distractions such as social media or talking with friends. Talk as a group about distractions that might interfere with studying effectively. Decide ahead of time on ways to avoid these distractions.
-
Make a plan—Want to avoid last-minute cramming for a test or staying up all night to finish a paper? Ask a qualified person to teach the group how to make a study plan. Then have each participant make a study plan for the next week. Plans can include gospel, school, or personal study. They should indicate specific study times and goals for each study session. After group members follow their study plans for a week, hold a follow-up meeting for participants to share and discuss their experiences.
Discussion
Encourage participants to talk about what they are learning. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity. You could ask questions like the following:
-
Why do you think it is important to learn study skills?
-
When have you been blessed by using good study skills?
-
What thoughts or impressions do you have about learning study skills?
-
How can you apply what you are learning in your life?
