金頁片

隨著有關頁片的流言廣傳，約瑟設法在第一版摩門經中發表正式聲明，以導正視聽。約瑟的前言和八位證人所寫的證詞都談到，頁片「看起來像金製的」。²摩爾門經的作者們只說他們把信息刻寫在「頁片」上。³約瑟·密斯和證人們在文中強調頁片和精巧的鐫文都非常古老，⁴但引眾人暇想的卻是頁片那黃金般的光澤。⁵1827年9月，一位名叫摩羅乃的天使指示約瑟挖出頁片，又交代約瑟去翻譯這份古代紀錄。 ⁶他在1828年初到1829年6月這段期間從事翻譯工作，翻譯完成後，便把頁片交還給天使。  ⁷

證人們後來留下了跟頁片材質、重量、尺寸、厚度及裝訂有關的資料。頁片重約「四十到六十」磅（18-27公斤），⁸總厚度有四到六英寸（10-15公分）。⁹頁片量起來有「六或七英寸寬，八英寸長」（15-18公分寬，20公分長）¹⁰，每片厚度就像「錫片」¹¹一樣，根據愛瑪·斯密的說法，「拇指翻閱頁片，就像有時候翻閱書頁那樣，還會發出金屬的聲音。」¹²三個D字型的環扣從「書背」部分穿過頁片，裝成一冊。¹³根據一位證人的說法，「約有半本書」由一種黏著劑固定，免得損壞。被封住的這個部分，頁片無法分開，「像木頭一樣牢固」。¹⁴約瑟·斯密從鬆開的頁片翻譯。¹⁵

現代的研究人員從這些數據估算，純金的頁片應該至少45公斤（100磅）重，要刻字的話可能太軟。  ¹⁶保管摩爾門經紀錄的人很可能用合金來打造金屬片，讓它們有金色的外觀，但質地並不全是黃金。約瑟的弟弟威廉·斯密認為頁片的成分是「金與銅混合」。¹⁷
