約瑟·密斯獲得摩爾門經版權的訊息傳開時,在當地媒體間造成一陣轟動。各家報紙開始發佈即將出版的這本書及其翻譯的相關信息,按照拋邁拉Wayne Sentinel的報導,他們用「過去一段時間」以來的傳言來撰寫內容。Sentinel報導說,約瑟找到的古代文物,「一般在論及時都稱為金色聖經」。儘管編輯聲明這個說法在當地已廣為人知,但他提到頁片的金色外觀卻成了最早的文字記錄。1

隨著有關頁片的流言廣傳,約瑟設法在第一版摩門經中發表正式聲明,以導正視聽。約瑟的前言和八位證人所寫的證詞都談到,頁片「看起來像金製的」。2摩爾門經的作者們只說他們把信息刻寫在「頁片」上。3約瑟·密斯和證人們在文中強調頁片和精巧的鐫文都非常古老,4但引眾人暇想的卻是頁片那黃金般的光澤。51827年9月,一位名叫摩羅乃的天使指示約瑟挖出頁片,又交代約瑟去翻譯這份古代紀錄。 6他在1828年初到1829年6月這段期間從事翻譯工作,翻譯完成後,便把頁片交還給天使。  7

證人們後來留下了跟頁片材質、重量、尺寸、厚度及裝訂有關的資料。頁片重約「四十到六十」磅(18-27公斤),8總厚度有四到六英寸(10-15公分)。9頁片量起來有「六或七英寸寬,八英寸長」(15-18公分寬,20公分長)10,每片厚度就像「錫片」11一樣,根據愛瑪·斯密的說法,「拇指翻閱頁片,就像有時候翻閱書頁那樣,還會發出金屬的聲音。」12三個D字型的環扣從「書背」部分穿過頁片,裝成一冊。13根據一位證人的說法,「約有半本書」由一種黏著劑固定,免得損壞。被封住的這個部分,頁片無法分開,「像木頭一樣牢固」。14約瑟·斯密從鬆開的頁片翻譯。15

現代的研究人員從這些數據估算,純金的頁片應該至少45公斤(100磅)重,要刻字的話可能太軟。  16保管摩爾門經紀錄的人很可能用合金來打造金屬片,讓它們有金色的外觀,但質地並不全是黃金。約瑟的弟弟威廉·斯密認為頁片的成分是「金與銅混合」。17
