家譜和族譜

後期聖徒對家譜研究的興趣和投入，源自於教會早期歷史上的幾項重要事件。1823年，約瑟·斯密第一次與天使摩羅乃見面時，他被告知主會「將對父親所作的應許，栽植在兒女心中，而兒女的心將轉向父親」。11840年代初期，約瑟在伊利諾州納府教導，這項預言的應驗需要成員為已逝的親人執行拯救的教儀。2這些教儀包括代理洗禮、證實和家庭成員的印證，將他們最親密的關係保留到來生。聖徒滿懷熱忱地開始參與這些教儀。3

起初，教會成員主要是印證給他們的直系祖先，或是以「收養」親屬的身份印證給重要的教會領袖。41894年，惠福·伍會長宣布，後期聖徒應該研究自己的家譜，並將祖先的名字帶到聖殿，好讓家人可以印證在一起。「我們要後期聖徒從今以後，盡力追溯〔他們的〕家譜，讓自己能與祖先印證在一起。兒女要印證給父母，讓這條鎖鏈盡可能地延伸下去。」5隨著教會成員蜂擁到聖殿，為已逝的家人執行代理教儀，聖殿成為後期聖徒更重要、更常規的一項崇拜。6

家譜學會

1895年，總會會長團和十二使徒定額組核准成立猶他家譜學會（教會於1987年將其改制為家譜部門）。7約瑟·斐亭·斯密是該學會早期的領袖，最後也成為學會會長，他根據自己前往美國東北部圖書館和族譜學會的研究心得，實施了一套蒐集和典藏系統。8在族譜學會繼續擴展運作的同時，獻身於族譜研究的蘇莎·楊·蓋茲組織了一套編目系統，來追蹤每座聖殿的紀錄。在20世紀早期，她努力推廣家譜的發展，不僅撰寫文章、教導課程，還大力推動在慈助會中納入族譜教育，並擔任「猶他州先驅者的女兒」（the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers）協會會長。9蘇莎·楊·蓋茲和約瑟·斐亭·斯密在負責提供雜誌和課程內容的委員會裡工作，指導公眾收集祖先紀錄和使用圖書館的收藏資料。10

從族譜到家譜

20世紀，後期聖徒擴增了族譜紀錄的存取方式。1938年，他們是第一批使用微卷技術來保存紀錄的人。家譜學會的工作人員和後來的家譜部門，與檔案館、其他教會、州和郡政府等機構合作，用微卷技術拍攝紀錄，到1954年，共計拍攝了約1.5億頁的紀錄。他們隨後不斷加快腳步，到1992年已達到每年拍攝1.3億筆紀錄的成果。111969年，教會在鹽湖城舉辦了第一次世界家譜紀錄大會，旨在訓練業餘研究者，並召集各機構合作保存和存取紀錄。121980年第二次世界家譜紀錄大會的與會人數增加了一倍以上，部分原因是根據艾利斯·哈利的同名著作改編的電視劇根（Roots）在1977年首播後，社會大眾對族譜的興趣大為增加。哈利獲得楊百翰大學的榮譽博士學位，並與教會領袖合作，廣泛推廣世界家譜紀錄大會和家譜研究工作。13

1980年代，教會成員投入了一項大規模的工作，蒐集並記錄至少三代的家譜。14世人對家譜的興趣日益增加，連帶促成保存紀錄的內容不再狹隘地僅限於族譜資料。1987年，教會領袖將族譜部門更名為家譜部門，旨在吸引每一個人共襄盛舉。培道·潘會長說：「更名為『家譜』，會讓這份事工聽起來不那麼冷冰冰，也更能吸引人。……神聖的家譜是聖殿教儀的基礎。」15

科技的進步與合作

1999年，教會推出FamilySearch.org，這是一個用於家譜研究的網站和資料庫，同時也追蹤為死者執行的代理教儀工作。FamilySearch.org網站以60年的微卷攝影紀錄為基礎，在其問世後的20年內，提供了超過20億張可存取的影像。16FamilySearch的索引編制工作始於2006年，授權義工使用者檢視和轉錄歷史文件，以協助研究人員。17其他為推動公眾研究家譜所做的努力也取得了豐碩的成果，包括建立了數千個家譜中心、與地區和國家檔案館合作以擴大紀錄的存取，以及在2011年舉辦了第一屆尋根科技大會（RootsTech）——世界上最大的家譜大會。18

教會一直處於家譜研究的領先地位。教會成員努力參與三代家譜計畫，並為祖先提供代理教儀，加上教會長久以來致力於保存和分享世界各地的紀錄，促成了2013年在FamilySearch.org上完成的群眾外包及通力合作的家譜樹。羅素·納爾遜會長說，這樣的聯合工作進一步推動了「為神所有的兒女組織家譜樹」的目標。19
