海倫·甘·惠尼

海倫·甘出生於1828年，父母是禧伯和維蕾特·甘，她見證了福音復興初期的許多事件。她三歲時，父母和百翰·楊家族中，他們的幾位好友一起受洗。海倫後來回憶說，這兩家就像「一家人」。事實上，兩個家庭一起搬到俄亥俄州嘉德蘭，與聖徒聚集之後，「百翰叔叔」就為海倫施洗。她很喜歡星期天下午到嘉德蘭的樹林裡上聖經班。¹

後期聖徒遷徙到鹽湖谷期間，海倫生下兩個兒子。大兒子為死產，二兒子則出生沒幾天就過世了。她第三個孩子在鹽湖谷誕生，卻在當天死亡。海倫其他八名子女都得以存活，但大女兒16歲時死於結核病，小女兒4歲時死於猩紅熱，還有一個兒子21歲時過世。在海倫的同意下，賀瑞斯娶了兩位多重婚姻的妻子，露西·布魯克司漢和瑪麗·奎華斯。露西婚後不到一年就過世了。瑪麗住在海倫隔壁，兩人相互幫忙照顧小孩。⁷

海倫在猶他積極參與教會和社區的事務，尤其是慈助會的慈善工作和慶祝活動。⁸在艾默琳·威爾斯的鼓勵之下，海倫撰寫了回憶教會最早期時光的文章，並刊登於婦女典範（Woman’s Exponent）雜誌。她成為一位產量豐富的作家和日誌作者。⁹當約瑟·斯密三世公開宣稱，他的父親在納府並未締結或教導多重婚姻時，海倫為了捍衛這項做法，出版了兩本小冊子：先知約瑟·斯密教導的多重婚姻（Plural Marriage as Taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith）和我們為什麼實行多重婚姻（Why We Practice Plural Marriage）。¹⁰
